Spain remains the most popular place for retirement, according to a report from Standard Life.

For Brits, Spain tops all the possible expat destinations – and has done so for quite some time.

The country is well aware of its regular influx of mature British residents and intends to keep them coming, offering translated documents to homeowners from the UK to make the move abroad easier.

Land registry certificates can now be requested from local authorities and online for a small fee of £25 (excl. VAT), helping retirees to join the existing expat community with a minimal amount of confusion.

Other popular expat destinations for retirement include Australia and the USA, Standard Life’s survey found. In third and fourth place were France and Ireland.

“Retiring abroad is a dream for many people, but does require careful planning and advice,” said John Lawson, head of Pensions Policy at Standard Life. “Doing your homework in advance of moving, matching your retirement income and expenditure, and making the appropriate decisions around purchasing an annuity or using income drawdown are key considerations. Your retirement income could also be subject to exchange rates and currency fluctuations, as well as local tax laws,” he explained.
